Taz-Hatz is a family business specialising in the manufacture of
handcrafted bush hats and caps. These are solid shape and crushable.
Taz-Hatz began in a small bedroom in a rented house at Tarraleah in
the Central Highlands, water catchment area of Tasmania in 1990.
Richard initially took an interest in leathercraft, later progressing
to hat manufacture. When the family moved to Hobart the whole house
became a production area.
After many attempts and experimentation with different patterns,
Richard finally put together a hat that looked like a bush hat. He
experimented with different types of leather and gradually kept
improving the prototype until today‚is excellent styles. He has
perfected the patterns and skills over many years, taking great pride
in every hat he sews. He now has a specialized workshop and produces
a comfortable easy wearing hat for the discriminating wearer.
Taz-Hats are made for particular individuals, from young children
through to Octogenarians. This is one of the factors, which makes
them so special.
The materials used, range from buffalo hide, cowhide, sheepskin,
kangaroo skin, pigskin and possum skin.
Character is added to each hat with the bands. These are made from
plaited leather. They are then taken out of the ordinary class of
hat by the addition of Tasmania‚is own Tassie Devil buckles, and
titivated up with home produced emu, pheasant, quail and guinea fowl
plumage.
Richard's hats have been exported to a worldwide market. There are
breathable hats for hot summers. Waterproof for inclement climates.
Light weight to heavy work wear. Fantastic colours to suit any sassy
lady and more sober colours for the conservative fellow. Bush
walkers and farmers come back for more.
